A snapshot of life in Motueka is now on display at Te Noninga Kumu-Motueka District Library, with organisers thrilled by the community response.
The competition, organised by the Motueka branch of law firm Glasgow Harley, aims to showcase local faces and the stories behind them. While 18 finalists were selected by the judges, a number of special mention photographs are also included in the exhibition.
About 90 photos were entered by 60 people, with the finalists selected across categories including local businesses and hospitality, agriculture, community groups and volunteering.
Selecting the finalists was a judging panel featuring award-winning Nelson photographer Steve Hussey, Motueka Ward councillor and photographer Trindi Walker, and Richmond photographer Sarah McGregor, who was named New Zealand Professional Photographer of the Year in 2025.
Speaking at the exhibition opening on Thursday, 17 September, Glasgow Harley client experience and communications coordinator Chantal Amador says it was a privilege to receive the entries.
Reading the "backstage stories" accompanying each image was a highlight and made her day, every day, she says.
The Nelson-based law firm opened its Motueka office a year ago and launched the competition as a way of getting to know the community.
“And I think it's job done," Chantal told the crowd with a laugh.
She says the response highlights the depth of stories within the district.
Plans are now underway for the finalist images to become part of an art trail before eventually being displayed at Glasgow Harley's Motueka office.
The 18 finalist photographs will remain on display at Te Noninga Kumu-Motueka District Library until Tuesday, 29 September.
Community members can vote online for the People's Choice Award, which carries a $500 cash prize, at www.glasgow-harley.co.nz/peopleofmotueka until Sunday, 18 October, with an award ceremony planned for November.
Other prizes include a three-hour photo shoot and 8x10-inch print package valued at $800 from Real Family Photography, along with Love Motueka vouchers redeemable at more than 40 participating businesses.
