It was a bad day to be one of 485kg of rubbish once disposed of at Tāhunanui Beach’s sand and dunes.
Hosted by Tāhuna Beach Holiday Park on Saturday, alcoholic beverage bottles dominated the findings from the 218 volunteers at the annual beach clean-up, and a flat-screen TV among the items requiring a larger bin.
About half of the rubbish was diverted from landfill, although exact figures are still being confirmed by Enviro NZ.
Holiday park events manager Debbie Armatage says the amount of rubbish was “disappointing” considering the bins available in the area.
However, Debbie says the clean-up is about more than the rubbish tally.
“Generally, the beach itself looks quite smart, but the surroundings seem to capture all the rubbish of however many months have gone by, and that's what our people are really good at fossicking out,” she says.
“It's just great to have it all pulled out and delighted with the result.”
