Nelson Tasman’s greyhound owners participated in the Great Global Greyhound Walk on Sunday in Nelson CBD, to promote responsible ownership, support adoption and highlight the affectionate nature of the breeds.
Organised by Nelson Greyhound Owners group, member Amanda Barrett counted 31 greyhounds, with some dressed to represent Mythical Mutts, which was the event’s 2026 theme.
Greyhound adoption has been a top dog topic since the last greyhound race meetings ran in New Zealand before the ban was enforced on 1 August.
Amanda says that the greyhound adoption pace locally is picking up, the most recent case the morning before Sunday’s event.
But the tail end of rehoming can’t be ignored.
“There's a lot out there that need a home… with the ban that's come into effect, these animals are just slowly going to become extinct,” she says.
“Everybody says what wonderful animals they are, it sounds a bit of a cliche, but they really are, and a hound will get suited to your home.”
