Southern Zone Rugby League is highlighting its intent to grow the game in the Top of the South by bringing one of its age grade showpieces to Tasman.
Previously, the annual One NZ Warriors South Island 14s tournament has been held in Oamaru, but this weekend the Waimea Old Boys grounds in Richmond will become a league hub.
Two hundred and seventy-five players across 11 teams from the six southern districts will battle it out for teenage bragging rights.
Tasman will take on Canterbury, the West Coast, Aoraki, Otago and Southland.
“Bringing the tournament here is part of our push to create more sustainable opportunities across Te Tauihu. We want to showcase the growth of the sport here,” confirms SZRL general manager Zara Fa’avae-Mika.
“These tournaments are about competition, district pride and also creating experiences, connections and pathways that keep our young people involved in the game,” says the former Nelsonian.
There are record numbers in the 14s girls’ grade, with all six districts represented.
“Growing opportunities for girls and women is a strategic priority for rugby league in the South Island, so seeing that growth in youth is hugely encouraging,” declares Zara.
The tournament follows the successful teenage girls’ pathway camp that the Warriors staged at Nelson College last year.
Waimea Old Boys teenage star Sienna Todd, who debuted for the Tasman Mako women this season, was a standout at that camp and was invited to Auckland for a two-day camp and league experience with the Warriors in July.
The Warriors have confirmed young Nelson College 1st VX utility back Vili Holani has already been signed up and is set to play in next year’s NSWRL U16 Harold Matthews Cup, while former Tasman Mako Harry Inch has impressed league judges with his toughness.
Given the size of the two-day South Island competition this weekend, Jubilee Park was seen as a more suitable venue than the college this time.
The games begin at 9.30am on Saturday, with Zara urging the local community to come along and see young talent in action.
