Holiday park celebrates 100th AGM
A century of beachside holidays and community service was celebrated at Tāhuna Beach Holiday Park’s 100th annual general meeting last week. The milestone marked 100 years since Tāhuna Beach Camp Inc was established in 1926 to improve the Tāhunanui reserve and foreshore for public recreation. The evening included reflections on the camp’s colourful history, from once-strict rules that barred groups of single young men from staying at the campground to a legal battle over bathrooms in holiday park units in the 1960s. The AGM also marked the launch of 100 Years of Beachside Memories, a new book by Emma Gilkison chronicling the generations of guests, staff, residents and board members.

Major CBD intersection closes
The Trafalgar St/Bridge St intersection is now closed until late November. Nelson City Council says as part of the final planning works to open Bridge St later this year, they need to temporarily close this intersection to complete the remaining above-ground works. During the closure, they will be installing the infrastructure for the rain gardens, preparing the pavement, completing kerb and channel works, and installing streetlights and street furniture. Council is extending the two-hour free parking during the closure for the Buxton, Montgomery, Wakatu and Millers Acre carparks.
New road rules now in force
Four new road rules aimed at improving safety and reflecting how people use the roads have come into effect from Thursday last week. The changes allow children aged 12 and under, along with their parents/caregivers, to ride bikes on footpaths, permit e-scooters in cycle lanes, introduce a minimum 1.5m passing gap for motorists overtaking cyclists, horse riders and e-scooter users, and require drivers to give way to buses signalling to leave a stop on roads with speed limits of 60kmh or less.
Brightwater’s new speed zone now live
The new Intersection Speed Zone (ISZ) on State Highway 6 in Brightwater is now live. Drivers should keep an eye out for the new variable speed limit (VSL) signs when they’re in the area. If the electronic sign is on, slow down to 60 kmh until you pass the second sign telling you the speed limit is 80 kmh again.
Daylight Savings Ride numbers are in
The Daylight Savings Ride on 27 September raised $2390 for the Nelson Marlborough Westpac Rescue Helicopter Trust. Organisers thanked the Top of the South Motorcycle Club and everyone who supported the event, as well as Nelson Host Lions Club for providing breakfast and MTF Finance Nelson for helping run the event and donating a $100 lucky-entry prize. The support will help the rescue helicopter continue providing its vital service across the region.
Sea service to honour maritime heritage
Nelson’s strong connection to the sea will be honoured at the annual Celebration of the Sea Service at Nelson Cathedral on Sunday, 18 October, at 10am. The civic service will bring together representatives from the Sea Cadets, Sea Scouts, Royal New Zealand Navy, Merchant Navy, Port Nelson, ex-service associations and the local MP. This year’s theme focuses on the work of the Mission to Seafarers, with national secretary Rev Lance Lukin speaking about the organisation’s support for seafarers across the country. The service also marks Trafalgar Day, commemorating Admiral Nelson’s victory at the Battle of Trafalgar on 21 October, 1805. Cathedral Precentor Rev Steve Jordan says Nelson’s maritime heritage remains central to the region’s identity, from its trade links through Port Nelson to the many water-based activities enjoyed by locals. The service is open to the public.
Fill a bucket for animals
SPCA is urging New Zealanders to volunteer just two hours for its annual Fill the Bucket fundraising appeal on 30 and 31 October. The campaign relies on volunteers to collect donations at approved sites nationwide, helping raise funds for sick, injured and abandoned animals. SPCA events and partnerships manager Elinor Birch says no experience is needed, only a willingness to help. The appeal also includes online fundraising, with supporters encouraged to donate or spread the word if they cannot volunteer. Sign up here.
