As the book closed on another Helping Families Nelson Book Fair, organisers and volunteers were grateful for the textbook community support.
The event’s fourth edition at the Hope Recreation Hall on Saturday and Sunday had thousands of donated pieces of literature, plus toys and puzzles, on offer to the more than 700 people who came through the door.
The $6700 total funds raised is a story worth telling.
In Helping Families Nelson manager Katrina Eyles’ book, the fair “exceeded expectations”, and with local families in need stacking up, the generosity from the public could help them turn over a new page.
"On Saturday, we had more people in one day than we had for the entire weekend at the last book fair," she says.
"Everyone's been very grateful, lots of comments about how it's well organised, and they love that it's spacious.
"We're a charity, so we run on donations and funding, and we're seeing more and more families coming through the door, even families with both parents working.
"So, any money that we can get in to keep us going keeps helping us help families."
