A fundraiser born from one woman's breast cancer journey in 2019 continues to move the dial for the Breast Cancer Foundation’s funds.
Marian's Pink Ribbon Cruise, held in honour of Marian Goodman, attracted about 100 classic vehicles filled with pink-clad supporters on Saturday.
The circuit from Sprig + Fern Brightwater to Nelson raised $5500 and an important message so women don’t take a cruisy attitude towards breast cancer.
It has been five years since Marian, who lives in Brightwater and is into hot rods, was discharged by her surgeon.
She says the cruise, supporting an organisation that was "fabulous" throughout her cancer journey, is about more than the money in the bucket.
“What we're trying to encourage people to do is get checked, we have a lot of cancer screening available to us in New Zealand, and we want people to take advantage of it,” she says.
The point of departure also holds a special significance for Marian.
“The reason we have the event here at the Brightwater Sprig + Fern is this is where I was able to come and feel safe and cared about, I could sit here at the Sprig with no hair, and all the patrons and everybody here in Brightwater kindly didn't stare too hard at my bald head.”
It’s palpable that the cruise remains deeply meaningful for Marian, particularly now she can enjoy having the wind in her hair again as she drives with the windows down.
