The Motueka Music Group's final concert of 2026 is described as “a shrew’d new comedy by Will Shakespeare and Penny Ashton”.
How is that collaboration possible, and what could it mean?
The answer is The Tempestuous, a one-woman show written and performed by comedian Penny Ashton.
Presented by the Motueka Music Group in partnership with Arts on Tour New Zealand, the production is described as a solo literary musical and a Shakespearean frolic. While Shakespeare's language can seem daunting, Ashton makes it accessible, weaving modern expressions into Elizabethan-style speech with sharp comic timing. She also slips lines lifted straight from Shakespeare into the script.
Every line is clear and every character distinct, despite Ashton portraying no fewer than 13 characters throughout the performance.
For those yet to encounter Penny Ashton, prepare for a workout from laughing. Quick-witted and skilled at interacting with audiences, Penny blends intelligent humour with local references and current events. Her delivery is polished and effortless.
Penny performs in major theatres throughout New Zealand, and the Motueka Music Group says it is delighted to bring the award-winning performer to the Chanel Arts Centre.
The group expects strong demand and encourages people to secure tickets early.
Looking ahead to 2027, the Motueka Music Group says it is thrilled to continue presenting high-quality performances at the publicly owned Chanel Arts Centre.
The group also supports the new Chanel Arts Centre Charitable Trust and looks forward to the venue continuing its contribution to the cultural life of the Motueka community.
