Five new trustees have joined the board of The Suter Art Gallery Te Aratoi o Whakatū, marking a new chapter for one of Nelson’s best-known cultural institutions.
Andrew Pullen, Gisella Carr, Danielle Martel, Eric Swale and Anne Rush were appointed following the gallery’s Annual Public Meeting, joining continuing trustees Jane du Feu and Bruno Simpson on the refreshed seven-member board.
The appointments follow the retirement of trustees Steve Green, Margaret Soderberg, Rebecca Mason and Nic Foster, whose contributions were acknowledged at the meeting attended by Nelson Mayor Nick Smith.
“The Suter Art Gallery is one of Nelson’s treasures, and the city is very grateful for the work the trustees do to help sustain this 127-year-old institution,” Nick says.
“The Suter is a critical part of Nelson’s arts sector and one of the assets we need to nurture as we seek formal UNESCO recognition of Nelson as a creative city.”
Among the new appointments is Andrew Pullen, who brings extensive leadership and governance experience, including senior executive roles, business growth expertise and board leadership across commercial and community organisations.
“It is a delight and an honour to join the board of one of Nelson's most iconic institutions,” he says.
“The Suter, with its more than 100 years of history, is a world-class space right in the heart of our beautiful city. I look forward to continuing to build on the progress made by the previous board and existing team, ensuring that the next 100 years for The Suter are as bright as its first.”
The Suter director Toni MacKinnon says that the new trustees are joining at an important time for the gallery.
“The Suter has a significant role to play in the cultural life of Nelson and the wider region. I’m looking forward to working with the new board to build on what we’ve achieved, support our artists and visitors, and keep the gallery thriving as a place for everyone.”
Toni also paid tribute to the outgoing trustees, recognising their commitment during a challenging period for the gallery.
“They brought huge commitment, care and a deep knowledge of The Suter to their roles. I’ve really valued working with them and am grateful for the support they’ve given me and the Gallery.”
