Heavy rain on Friday influenced Round Four of club cricket's Tasman Premier League, with all three toss winners choosing to bowl when play got under way on Saturday.
WTTU Tigers secured a tense two-wicket win over Wakatu to move into fourth place, Car Company Stoke Nayland maintained their unbeaten start with a 17-run victory over Taylors Contracting Wolves, and NBS ACOB climbed into second after a 40-run win against Quaystone Nelson College.
WTTU survive late scare
At Jubilee Park, Wakatu were bowled out for 124 after failing to convert promising starts into substantial partnerships.
At 4/98 they appeared well placed, but lost their final six wickets for just 26 runs.
Daniel Hooper top-scored with 27, while extras added 25. Daniel Wightman led the WTTU attack with 3/16, while Adam Ward claimed 2/14, including the key wicket of Hooper.
WTTU looked comfortable at 67/1 in reply before a dramatic middle-order collapse saw them lose six wickets for 29 runs and slump to 96/7.
Lucky Singh top-scored with 39, while Jacob Walters made 26 and Jack Aldridge added 18.
Logan Andrews and Nathan Downey steadied the innings, guiding WTTU to 125/8 off the final ball of the 30th over to secure a two-wicket win and a bonus point.
Noah Hassan was Wakatu's standout bowler with 4/42, while Cory Stewart took 2/26.
Stoke Nayland remain unbeaten
At Brightwater Domain, Stoke Nayland stumbled to 34/3 in a match reduced to 45 overs because of ground conditions.
Liam Hobbs removed both openers before George Aerakis accounted for Josh Smith.
Jatin Sandhir and Henry Race rebuilt the innings, with Race scoring 40 before departing at 112.
Sandhir then combined with Dylan Eginton for an 85-run sixth-wicket partnership, with Eginton contributing 47.
Sandhir's excellent 74 helped lift Stoke Nayland to 242/9.
Hobbs was the standout Wolves bowler, finishing with 4/32 from nine overs, while Mike Olsen and Josh Jones took two wickets apiece.
Wolves made a strong reply through Riley Weir's 59 from 71 balls and Sean Neal's 73 from 67 deliveries. Cam McLean added 35 as Wolves reached 202/5 and looked well placed to chase down the target.
However, McLean's dismissal at 202/6 triggered a collapse. Wolves lost their final four wickets for 23 runs to be dismissed for 225 in 42.5 overs.
Neal was trapped lbw by Eginton at 223.
Eginton finished with 3/51, while Jared Silvester claimed 2/40 and Liam Hall 2/28 as Stoke Nayland secured a 17-run victory.
Perera delivers all-round masterclass
At Botanics, Nelson College removed both ACOB openers cheaply before Vinodh Perera produced a magnificent 122 from 131 balls, including 19 fours and a six.
Perera shared partnerships of 42 with Jonty Raxworthy (11) and 40 with Sam John (10) before finding strong support from James Graham.
The pair added 107 for the sixth wicket, with Graham contributing 40. Graham fell at 215/6 and Perera followed four runs later at 219/7.
ACOB then lost their final five wickets for just nine runs to be dismissed for 224 in 45.5 overs.
Nelson College used eight bowlers, with Yoshia Rodley leading the attack with 3/45. Oscar Molnar (2/23), Ryder Gestro (2/19) and Bradley Norris (2/26) each grabbed two wickets, while Thomas Moloney finished with 1/31.
Nelson College never established the partnerships required in reply.
Moloney made 31 and Jasper Smith 26 in an opening stand of 73, while Jordan van den Berg battled to an unbeaten 41 from 76 balls.
Despite that resistance, wickets continued to fall and Nelson College were dismissed for 184 in 44.2 overs.
Perera completed an outstanding all-round display with figures of 3/32. Hamish Blomfield (2/30), Raxworthy (2/34) and Matthew O'Sullivan (2/30) also claimed two wickets each.
The 40-run win lifted ACOB into second place, although Nelson College denied them a bonus point by passing 180.
Falcons dominate Marlborough derby
Local bragging rights went to the Falcons, an amalgamation of the Wairau Valley and Wairau clubs, after a comprehensive 73-run win over the Dolphins, made up of Renwick and Celtic players.
Batting first at Horton Park, the Falcons posted 217 all out.
Matthew Stretch scored 52 from 79 balls, while Sam Boyce top-scored with 81 from 90.
Luke Holdaway was the pick of the Dolphins bowlers with 5/50 from nine overs.
The Dolphins struggled in reply and were dismissed for 144 in the 31st over.
Tom Sutherland top-scored with 36 from 56 balls, while Liam Young added 25 from 36.
Four Falcons bowlers took two wickets or more. James Bell claimed 3/31 from 5.3 overs, Daniel Baker took 2/26, Boyce completed a fine all-round performance with 2/20 from seven overs, and Griffin Carter finished with 2/16 from five.
Points table after four rounds:
Stoke Nayland – 19; ACOB – 12; Falcons – 10; WTTU – 9; Nelson College – 8; Wolves – 5; Dolphins – 5; Wakatu – 5.
