Motueka Roller Sports Club came home with more than its fair share of glory from the New Zealand Rink Hockey Championships in Whanganui, collecting a national title and three silver medals.
Twenty-two club members made the trip to the tournament late last month, with five teams competing across four grades. Strong growth over the past 18 months meant many players were newcomers to national competition.
Dedicated training, often three times a week, paid off as Motueka secured a place in the final of every grade entered.
The under-15 Motueka Dolphins, led by Lewis England, went unbeaten throughout the tournament. Their teamwork helped secure a 3–1 victory over Hastings in the final and a national title.
The Motueka Manta Rays, captained by Sante Zapata, claimed silver after facing a strong Whanganui side. Goalkeeper Austin Rowling worked hard under sustained pressure, with the inexperienced Motueka team making the most of limited attacking opportunities despite an 11–3 loss.
In division two, Motueka Mischief secured a finals berth with a close 4–3 win over Hastings. They then led for much of the second half against the Whanganui River Rats before two late goals gave Whanganui a narrow 5–4 victory.
Just 15 minutes later, Mischief players Serena Curran and Rosy McLeod were back on the rink for the women’s final. The predominantly novice Motueka Mermaids earned silver, finishing 5–1 behind an experienced Whanganui team.
Motueka Magic, led by Shane Curran, faced a tougher tournament after losing two players to a collision in their opening game. Despite the setback and a strong performance from goalkeeper Alana Janssen, they finished seventh in division two.
