CAPENERHURST, Richard (Cappy)

It is with great sadness that we report the passing of Richard "Cappy" Capenerhurst. 

Cappy was a well-loved teacher at Nelson College from 1991 until his retirement in 2019.

As well as teacher in charge of computing studies, he served as Barnicoat housemaster and timetabler extraordinaire.  He also ran the combined Nelson College and Nelson College for Girls school ski trip for over 20 years taking an estimated 1500 students skiing at Mount Hutt and even a few ski trips to Canada. 
A football fanatic, he was a player and school football coach for many years. 

Following retirement, Cappy continued mountain biking, playing bridge and worked part time as a driver for Top South Media. 

Most of all, Cappy was known for his stunning (though dry and even cynical) sense of humour.

Following a brief illness, Cappy passed away on 27 July 2026.

He leaves behind his wife Sue, children Simon, Sarah and Rebecca and four grandchildren. 

He will be missed by all those who knew him.
